Keep It Beautiful
To ensure the longevity and beauty of your cherished wood products, it is essential to follow a regular maintenance schedule. For all wood items that come into contact with food, it is recommended to treat them with a monthly application of food-grade Mineral Oil and/or Wood Butter.
This routine maintenance serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it prevents the wood from drying out, reducing the likelihood of cracks. Additionally, it enhances the natural features of the products, bringing out their hues, grains, and colors. This added layer of protection also helps guard against moisture exposure from handwashing.
At the very least, a monthly application of mineral oil is advised for regular maintenance. For extra protection, consider applying Wood Butter, a combination of Mineral Oil and Beeswax.
For wood items that endure more wear and tear, such as cutting boards and charcuterie boards subject to frequent handwashing, or coasters that may be exposed to moisture, more frequent treatments may be necessary.
When it comes to food contact products, it is crucial to use only Food Grade Mineral Oil and Wood Butter. EDC Woodcraft's Wood Butter, comprising 100% Pure USP Food Grade Mineral Oil, 100% Natural Fractionated Coconut Oil (Tasteless & Odorless), 100% Triple-Filtered Beeswax, and enriched with Vitamin E, is non-toxic and safe for surfaces that come into contact with food. If desired, we also carry in house Wood Butter that does not contain Fractionated Coconut Oil.
Method:
- Apply liberal amount of Mineral Oil with a soft, clean cloth.
- Allow Mineral Oil to penetrate and soak into the wood for 8-12 hours.
- Buff the wood with a soft, clean cloth.
- If desired, apply a thin layer of Wood Butter.
- Allow it to dry for 15 minutes, then buff for a lustrous satin finish.
For non-food contact items, you can still use Food Grade Mineral Oil and Wood Butter if desired. However, consider alternative finishes such as Danish Oil, which provides protection against heat exposure (used on our Trivets); it may be more suitable. Explore various wood finishes based on your preferences and needs, and refer to product instructions for guidance.
